Todd James AKA REAS

Todd James is a painter and graphic artist based in New York City. He began drawing graffiti at age twelve on streets and subway cars, gaining much notoriety in graffiti circles. He was introduced to the gallery world through his involvement with Street Market, a collaborative exhibition with artists Stephen Powers and Barry McGee. His work is composed of simple line drawings, usually of women going about their daily routines such as shopping, working out, talking on the phone, gossiping, etc. Why James holds this fascination is a mystery and only adds to the bizarre combination of raw, street-inspired grittiness and cute, comic sensibilities. In addition to his painting work, Todd James has produced numerous illustrations for hip-hop record covers and has taken his graffiti influenced commercial art to clients including The Source, Stussy, Adidas and others. James recently completed an installation at the 2002 Liverpool Biennial. He is currently splitting time between Los Angeles and New York as the founder/producer/director of “Minoriteam” on Adult Swim/Comedy Central.
